Magazine tasks and research

Task: To familirize yourself with the range of magazines
To work out the conventions of design and of attitude which they all share

Comparing the covers

Mojo
  • Mid-shot photos, could be seen as more welcoming and inviting.
  • Using colours to appeal to inparticular audiences - for example, the use of brighter colours may be targetted at a female audience and also a at a younger age range.
The colour theme is focused around the band - appeals to a smaller more concentrated audience.

  • Less writing on Smash Hits  -  younger audience - more focus on the one person. Giving the affect of it being much simpler and less busy - which could reflect the attitude of the magazine being more formal and mature.
  • Mojo has slightly more sub-headings but is still focused on the band, - narrows down the variety of audiences.
  • NME has a lot of subheadings - more about a different range of music - bigger audience.
  • All photos cover part of the mast head - highlighting that the magazine is all about the content.
